Shock Diamonds eBook ER Mason

"Hey we're men it's what we do" setting fire stuff and creating confusion and mayhem is just part of the Griffins crew's routine. Of course Adrian ( commander Tarn) who is 82.5 percent more likely to be involved in controversy, could be the reason for that. This time the controversy is humans abduction. While ultimately it's aliens that are benefiting from the abductions and humam slave labor. There are humans envolved at every level, including, one Mr. Blackwell. Blackwell is rich, ruthless and now wants the Griffin badly. He's also part of the original money machine behind creating the Griffin in the first place.
This third book in the series is well written and edited. The characters, while we've been introduced to most of them before are still evolving. The action and situations are well written although are not quite as surprising. While they are still creative theynare also more routine feeling. Still it's an excellent read well worth the time and expense.

Shock Diamonds eBook ER Mason Reviews

Dragged me in and spat me out the other side like a good book should. As good as the first two with just a few more laugh out loud moments.
First of all I love the characters in this book, I mean there are only so many ways to go with people in space adventure stories whether they be Kirk clones Captain mal clones or any of the other countless types that are out there and have been done before, these are special. They were same same but different and believable personalities. Character development was intelligent and concise with out getting bogged down with hyper loads of introspection and soul searching which can bug the crap out of me. Trust me when I say I could go on but that would just turn me into an over analysing wanker and say that they are some of the best characters I've encountered in make believe world.

Plot line like the second had multiple threads well tied off bar the main which has left a nice little hook for the next book. Fast paced with enough slow down points to give absorption a chance and set up for the next act.
Now for the part some people seem to take issue with and that's the science used. A lot of it is fact - g forces, weightless ness ect and some of it is theoretical ie light speeds , blue light effects ect and some like the blue light planet effects are whole cloth fun until proven or disproven which in this book is part of the fun since it's not really about the science at all.

I really don't have anything bad to say about this book except enjoy.
This is the third book in a series. Mason is probably the most intelligent sci fi writer of the current crop. The writing is good and well organized. The plot evolves continually, as is befitting an adventure tale. There is just a little too much non-scientific and implausible technology stuff going on. Standing (floating, really) 10 feet away from a blob of antimatter eating through a bulkhead and living to tell about it? Really? A little more literary discipline and a read through by a physicist and a good editor would bring these books up to world class. This book is a must read for anyone who likes modern sci fi.
I have been jaded for some time with the root'n-toot'n-shoot'n Space Opera B-grade novels I have been recently forced to read (primarily because of my addiction to Sci-Fi and the relative paucity of really good offerings).

Well welcome to Mr Mason's alternative (near-future) universe.

This series focuses on a rather interesting and unorthodox individual (and loyal colleagues) who confronts many adventures and problems - but also has the largely hands-off and unseen assistance of the most advanced race in the universe. This by itself is a rather intriguing scenario. The First person character is cast pretty-much as the 'don't wanna be a super-hero' - super-hero sort of chap.

The story-line is pretty good. The problem I perceive with Mr. Mason's writing is that he oscillates between laconic and verbose styles - sometimes to the point where one 'guiltily' skips a few pages. There does not seem to be an 'integrated' feel to what I have read so far. The editing (lack of many typos) is professional.

But that aside, I have enjoyed the first three books of this series and have begun the fourth.

I really like the one-on-one dialogue that goes on between the central characters. A true sense of the ridiculous seems to be a particular talent for Mr. Mason. Very amusing and refreshing stuff. Just what a guy or gal needs sometimes to raise the odd belly laugh while reading.

And lastly, I am quite gobsmacked that I picked up and read the first two novels from for 0.00 USD. Huh! ???
Because this author's work may not have risen as it should have out of the typical pond-scum is no reason to insultingly devalue his work and efforts.

I recommend begin at the beginning - first novel in series.
Enjoy...
This book, and the other two "Griffin" books (Deep Crossing and Fatal Boarding), are highly entertaining. They may not be great literature, but they sure are a lot of fun! The author does a good job of creating interesting and like-able characters, and offers a refreshing mix of technology, action and humor. One other thing that I really appreciate is the way that each of these three related stories can stand on it's own merits, with a beginning, an intriguing plot and a satisfying ending.

I think that there are some implausible (and unnecessary) plot twists. but there's no denying that Mason is a highly entertaining storyteller. Here's hoping that the stories keep coming!
